Visual Acuity in the Elderly

What is the test ?

Screening test involves using a Snellen chart to test each eye.

Why do the test ?

In the elderly, screening and the correction of correctable eye problems helps to a restore vision and improve function. Vision problems are more likely in persons over 65 years, and they are more likely to lead to serious consequences such as accidental injuries.

Who should do the test ?

Any person age 65 years and above should be screened.

How is the test done ?

Poor vision can be easily detected by the use of a Snellen chart. Ophthalmoscopy can be used to detect ocular media opacities like cataracts.
